- All meetings with students should be documented in BHSC.
- Meet with students each semester prior to registration to review course selections.
- Students should come to prepared with an up to date Degree Check Sheet to all advising appointments to aid in course selections.
- Students must save ALL syllabi and coursework from their Social Studies classes throughout their college career to aid in completing their Inquiry and Analysis Portfolio (due in the spring of their junior year).
Introduction to the Social Studies Education Program (freshman and newly admitted students)

- Welcome
advisees to the program in early fall and encourage them to attend the
MANDATORY Social Studies orientation session in late September.
- Stress the rigor of the program and the need for careful planning in order to graduate in four years.
- Explain
the GPA requirements for admission to student teaching (2.75 cumulative
& 3.0 major GPA required in February of Junior year). Many students play catch-up for three years due to poor grades in their freshman year.
Program Requirements/Reminders for ALL Social Studies Education Majors

- All students are required to submit an Inquiry and Analysis Portfolio in early spring semester of their Junior year.
- Students
will be responsible for arranging transportation to and from middle and
high schools once they begin taking courses with observation components
(HIST316, EDUC 413, EDUC 419, EDUC 491 and student teaching).
- Students must complete a PPD test and a Criminal Background check before taking HIST316, EDUC 413, EDUC 419 and EDUC 491. Information regarding Criminal Background checks can be found on the Office of Clinical Studies website.
- Student Teaching applications are submitted one year before the expected date of student teaching. The deadline for Student Teaching applications is in February after the start of Spring semester.
- Students must either pass the CORE exam or meet the exemption requirements before they are accepted into student teaching.
- ALL
coursework must be completed before student teaching in the spring of
their senior year, except for EDUC400 (9 credit student teaching
practicum) and HIST493 (3 credit student teaching seminar).
- Students take Praxis II (content exam) in their senior year
